Cultural Heritage : Dollars & Sense Course
Module 2: Culture, Heritage & Economics
I. INTRODUCTION AND MODULE OBJECTIVES
This course offers inputs by conservation specialists on matters related to the economics of heritage. Through four pre-recorded online classes, participants are to form a general understanding of heritage valuation, cultural mapping and issues in urban archaeology. The end focus is the analysis of perception towards heritage properties. Participants will be divided into groups where they shall discuss the values of five selected buildings and present their conclusion at the Live Tutorial session.
Attendance for the Live Tutorial is compulsory. Participants will receive an electronic certificate of attendance upon completing the course.
Module Learning Outcomes: Understanding the relation of cultural heritage and economics, focusing on Perception and Uniqueness of Heritage Buildings.

II. TEACHING TEAM
Assoc. Prof. Sr. Dr. Lim Yoke Mui
Having completed her Diploma in Surveying at College of Estate Management UK, Dr. Lim Yoke Mui pursued her degree and masters in planning at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Formerly an Associate at one of the largest Quantity Surveying firm in Kuala Lumpur, she now serves as an Academician at USM and is highly involved in developing frameworks for preparation of costing document for heritage properties.
Prof. Dr. Johannes Widodo
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Johannes Widodo is an Associate Professor, Director of the TTCL Centre for Asian Architectural and Urban Heritage in Melaka (Malaysia), and Executive Editor of Journal of Southeast Asian Architecture of the National University of Singapore. He is also the Founder of Maan (modern Asian Architecture Network) and INTA (International Network of Tropical Architecture), Director of DoCoMoMo Macau and an executive server of mASEANa project.
Dr. Eng. Titin Fatimah
Dr. Titin Fatimah finished her doctoral study from Kyoto University, Japan in 2012 and currently works as a lecturer and researcher at Department of Architecture and Planning, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Tarumanagara, Jakarta, Indonesia. Her primary research is on cultural landscape, heritage conservation, vernacular architecture, community-based development, cultural heritage tourism and rural tourism. One of her studies focuses on community-based cultural landscape conservation in the surrounding area of Borobudur World Heritage Site. She is actively involved in heritage conservation activities through Indonesian Heritage Trust (Badan Pelestarian Pusaka Indonesia). She is also assigned as the Coordinator of Cultural Landscape Working Group at Indonesian Built Environment Researchers Association.
Lim Chen Sian
Lim Chen Sian is the Secretary and Treasurer of ICOMOS Singapore. He is a historical archaeologist interested in the transitional period between pre-and-post European contact in Southeast Asia and the development of port settlements, military fortifications, and the material culture of trade. He has excavated in Central America, Burma, Egypt, Java, Kampuchea, Malay Peninsula, and Sumatra. He has been involved in Singapore archaeology since 2002. As of 2006 he led all the major archaeological investigations in the country, and works extensively on lobbying for legislative changes pertaining to the necessity for impact assessments, protection of archaeological sites, and artifact ownership.
Ar. Steven Thang Boon Ann
Ar. Steven Thang obtained his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Louisiana in 1986. A private practitioner with his own architectural firm and regularly appointed as an expert witness in construction disputes. He was briefly introduced to anthropology of North America in the university and gained interest in heritage subjects. He was further trained as a conservator in Borobudur, Indonesia, in 2004. Ar. Steven Thang interest is field conservation techniques especially in analytical works.
Currently he is a Council member of the Malaysian Institute of Architects and Hon. Treasurer of ICOMOS Malaysia Chapter. He is also active in developing Malaysian Standards as chairman and committee member to various technical committees in Malaysian Department of Standards.
